Update for the Strawberry festival - down at the bottom...

What does Memorial Day weekend mean to you? The unofficial mark of “summer, summer, summertime; time to sit sit back and unwind”? Getting your grub on at a family barbecue? Enjoying an outdoorsy event with a loved one? The half-yearly sale at Nordstrom? Perhaps it means all of the above! However, we all know that recreational activities are secondary to the importance of this holiday weekend.

For me, it's the annual Memorial day/summer kick-off beach BBQ view lots of food, friends, beach volley ball and surfing...well not this year due to my car accident :(...Next year :)

On Memorial Day, we remember and honor our fallen soldiers. We pay our respects to all the courageous men and women who died while serving our country. We also honor all of our troops who are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and fighting for our country and our freedom. On this day of observance, we not only remember our veterans and troops, but also their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Whether you decide to visit a cemetery and place flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes, say a prayer for the family of those who serve/have served our nation, or, at the very least, participate in the “National Moment of Remembrance” at 3:00pm on Monday, pause, reflect, and thank all for their service to our country.

Below are a list of events happening on Memorial Day weekend. Enjoy, soak up some sun, and eat lots of delicious food! Even though summer doesn’t officially start until a month or so after the Memorial Day weekend, most of us treat this three-day holiday as if it does mark the onset of the season.

Here’s our list of where you should be this weekend! Here is a list of all the soon-to-be-summer festivities in San Diego right from the UT San diego:

VISTA: Strawberry is king at Vista street festival Sunday

Info from NC Times

Article by  •  May 24, 2012

Merriam-Webster defines "strawberry" as the juicy, usually red fruit of several temperate herbs (genus Fragaria) of the rose family that is technically an enlarged pulpy receptacle bearing numerous achenes on its surface.
Folks in Vista define it as the focal point of an annual festival that organizers anticipate will draw up to 40,000 people and more than 200 vendors downtown on Sunday. The street fair runs from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
A strawberry beer home-brewing contest, a strawberry dish-and-dessert cooking competition and a strawberry pie baking championship are among the featured events at the 2012 Strawberry Festival, where the tasty red fruit is king.
Other highlights of the festival include the Strawberry 5000 5K run at 7:30 a.m., a cupcake-cooking contest sponsored by Vista's Little Cakes Cupcake Kitchen, which recently won an episode on Food Network's popular "Cupcake Wars," and plenty of live music.
The party culminates nearly a yearlong planning process involving the Vista Village Business Association and the Vista Chamber of Commerce.
"It's whole day dedicated to enjoying strawberries and having a lot of good, family fun," said Bret Schanzenbach, the Chamber of Commerce's chief executive officer.
This year's party will be more compact and focused solely downtown. Gone are events that in the past were held as far away as Brengle Terrace Park. A car show staged last year at the Civic Center has been moved to the Sonic Drive-In parking lot and repackaged as a strawberry-red, hot rod classic.
"We've beefed up the entertainment and improved the offerings by vendors," said Mario Carrillo, president of the Vista Village Business Association.
Organizers also noted that this year's event, more than any other, will feature the strawberry. "There will be strawberries everywhere," said Gumaro Escarcega, who serves as executive director of the Business Association. Frazier Farms, he said, will provide strawberries by the crateful.
Gumaro Escarcega, who serves as executive director of the Business Association, said the most challenging aspect of staging this year's festival was "the logistics."
"Working with the Sheriff's Department, working with the businesses, working with the city of Vista, securing all the necessary permits and lining up the vendors, it's a lot of work," he said.
"There are a lot of moving parts," said Schanzenbach, who added that the planning effort began almost a year ago. Among the moving parts this year is the free parking being offered at the Vista courthouse complex off Melrose Drive, where fairgoers can hop on free shuttles to get downtown.
"We're expecting a lot of people," he said. "The shuttle will make for much easier access."
Some 150 volunteers have been assigned various duties, from helping vendors set up to helping visitors find a place to park.
So, why a "strawberry" festival?
"Once upon a time, Vista was the strawberry capital of the world," Schanzenbach said. "I remember growing up in the '80s and there were strawberry fields galore out on East Vista Way."
